An easy way to stay relevant in your Career

Trailblazing in neural link, sustainable energy, self-driving cars to exploring the unknown in outer space while tweeting to fans on social media, billionaire/entrepreneur Elon Musk responds to critics who think some of Musk’s endeavours as a waste of time and money:

People are mistaken when they think that technology just automatically improves. It does not automatically improve. It only improves if a lot of people work very hard to make it better, and actually it will, I think, by itself degrade, actually.

You look at great civilizations like Ancient Egypt, and they were able to make the pyramids, and they forgot how to do that. And then the Romans, they built these incredible aqueducts. They forgot how to do it.

Well said! We do tend to forget things we have learned overtime especially without constant practice. In other words:
Skills decay when we stop learning.

The key to success is moving forward, not just with respect to time but also in terms of skills & knowledge. In this age staying relevant in one’s career has become more crucial than ever and this slope is not going to come down neither will it be waiting for anyone to catchup.

A way to follow a progressive mentality and implement it in your career is ALE (not the beer, though i like it very much):

ALE: Aspire, Learn and Execute

When it comes to learning new stuffs we lie by saying we don’t have time but entrepreneurs and leaders of industries have proved it wrong. It’s not time we lack but the energy to do it.

It’s not time we lack but the energy to do it.

Now I’m not going to get into how to cultivate positive energy by taking healthy food, workout & fitness, good sleep cycles and all that, thought they will help, but 90% of the time following these trends tend to throw people down the steep curve it involves mainly because of the lack of motivation due to no instant results. Not taking anything away from these good-to-haves (must-haves? Go debate!). Did geeks turned entrepreneurs of tech industry follow these healthy habits religiously? Strange food habits, sleepless nights & working out of a chair all day long. Go figure!

Back to energy which fuels you to keep on learning. Trigger, Motivation and Action. Trigger is that moment which makes you wonder, respond to that stimuli and if interesting enough to motivate you into exploring it more. Honestly, I put that complex and weird looking image on top (which is indeed awesome when I stare at it too long) intentionally cause it might act as a trigger for people to come and view this article; after scrolling through a few lines and if found interesting enough, through sufficient motivation you end up reading this. And this. And this as well. You see what happened here? You were gaining energy during this process , enough to get you here.

Continuing with the energy gained through Trigger->Motivation, now its time to do an action on it. A probable action could be, to like this post or subscribe to this blog to keep on getting more of these so-called Self-Improvement, wait, fuck that, call it YOLO…err no call it YORO (You only Read Once). Okay! I’m being selfish here by talking about reading and liking my article. I got carried away. Lets get back to applying ALE (Aspire, Learn & Execute)->TMA (Trigger, Motivation & Action) to learn skills and developing self. I have to admit getting carried away while stimulating your brain feels good. Damn! No more about it, I promise!

Trigger

Watch, Observe, Read, Explore (WORE). Snap back to reality and think of WORE as a past tense of WEAR as in wear an armor for a war. Think of it as if you have WORE this on you like a Batman/Ironman suit which will give you a reliable source of energy/tricks.

Watch

I know you do love to watch stuff online. However, start training your brain to question Why should I watch this? and answer it within 10 sec because there is a hell loads of bullshit content out there just made to entertain and manipulate you, waste your time and profit out of it. Don’t get conned. If only there was an app which says how good/beneficial this video is for you. Wow! Great Idea! I should probably start making it before any of you competitive folks jump on it.

Watch movies, series, short films etc. because people love them. And revolutionary products sometimes do come out of these medias. iPad, though debatable came to life because of the awesome movie 2001 A space odyssey by Stanley Kubrik. Read about it here. There are thousands of other UFO citing. Wait what…UFO: Unidentified Futuristic Origins. These UFOs could be in your mind right now dying to get out. You are keeping them as slaves. Let it out. Apologies, i got carried away once again 🙁

Observe

You know exactly what this means so i don’t need to get into it coz i have a startup (6figr.com) to run. All I can say for now is train your brain to observe things to its aesthetic core. You might have noticed that i use this phrase “train your brain” a lot, not a lot, twice to be precise. There are some cool hacks into doing the very same and i do have a number of articles i’ve read which i’m willing to share for the interested ones. Just post comments and i’ll reply with links for the same.

Read

Read books, articles, blogs, quora and repeat (for my layman friends out there, i meant the dictionary meaning of repeat). Many people don’t have a habit of reading but i’m not concerned with them right now because for all of you who have reached this point in my blog i say this “You can read”. So do it constantly.
Don’t go astray now. We are still talking about learning new skills.

Explore

Now that you have done all of the above or some of it, it’s time to explore. Put your thoughts into motion by researching on topics yourself. Don’t believe on what anyone else said because the internet is not devoid of shit. Explore and research yourself.

Motivation

Throughout your life you have wore (remember the trigger section?) many things and i’m not just talking about fashion here. Wore a smile, wore confidence, wore an attitude, wore dignity, wore many things. Okay i admit maybe i’m overfitting WORE here but you get the point. All of these psychological fashion has given you motivation in the past, present & continue to give you motivation in the future, maybe to go on a date or storm a party or dominate a conversation or an appraisal meeting or being a better self. So when something interesting triggers you and it tempts you to get onboard, its called motivation.

But deep down inside your incomprehensible mind you already know it. You know you procrastinate. The feeling of procrastination or doubting your ability induces a fear which stops you to learn something new. But sometimes fear can induce a motivation. Fear of missing out. Maybe you open that facebook tab every now and then or checkout instagram or pull down that notification on your phone to check whatsapp when you have nothing else to do. Of course you can go on to say its to catchup with my social circle or to explore new stuff but don’t lie to yourself on why you do it; to kill time. Maybe you really want to explore but those mediums also consist of shit from selfies to useless updates to celebrity lookalikes to …ahh don’t get me started on it. Filled with distractions to keep you engaged. There has not evolved an app free from all that crap. You know why? Because those people at facebook, quora, instagram may not be selfish assholes to engage people in crap content but they have to because you like it. Well stop liking it because it will make you irrelevant. And here you, is you, the one reading. Be a better judge of content. Get motivated and proceed to the next step, action.

Action

Now that trigger has consumed some of your energy and also given you some energy and if the difference is positive and led you on to the path of gathering enough motivation (I promised not to involve reading-my-blog example), you have gained enough energy to do an action. Execute it. Do an action. Don’t procrastinate. Let it be as small as adding a note (evernote, google keep, to-do’s) or as big as typing in that python code or learning machine learning (learning-machine-learning…lol) or anything within your motivated new interest(s) or liking/sharing this blog.

After all we are humans, we make mistakes, we get lazy, we skip steps. And technologies of this era are trying to close this gap. We are trying to close some of these gaps through our startup (6figr.com). People skip steps even though they want the very thing called success. And it is indeed possible to fill that step with a bridge through technology and that’s why we built a neural net to recommend relevant skills for present and future with a quantifiable figure of success. Because all of us want a Return of Investment. Let it be an investment of time or money or energy. It’s all about staying relevant at all time.

Lets assume after the trigger-motivation-action, you signed up for a course or started learning a new skill by yourself. Often it’s not a days job to be a pro. But now that you did an action and slept for the night, you have something new to look forward to the next day. This acts as an internal trigger and now the cycle repeats itself. Trigger to motivation to action and repeat without the WORE part of it. Relax now you don’t need to be creative every day in terms of psychological fashion.

Let’s reflect back to the beginning of Elon Musk’s words. Technology is not going to improve itself nor will your brain. Think of the brain as a very advanced technology not yet figured out by scientists and experts but you have it figured out to some extent because it is you who have that unique brain. And it’s not going to improve itself. Unless you want it to decay for some stupid reason, act upon it.

Begin by knowing where you stand right now, where you could be and how to get there.
